External Recognition : Day 9

Today was the last day of the DFI. Time just flew away! I really enjoyed all the sessions and learnt a lot. Sometimes I felt overwhelmed by the content and the knowledge that was shared with us. However, I learnt something new from each session that I could implement and apply in the teaching and learning. DFI has been providing an amazing platform for the teachers to get connected, learn, create and share. By attending DFI session, I feel more empowered and digitally fluent. I know I need to work on some of the tools to enhance my digital skills and brush up the things and in that case rewindable learning would be really helpful:). Today I came to know about  lots of opportunities for the teachers which are provided by Manaiakalani programme. We were added to DFI alumni group so that we could remain connected to each other.

"Visible teaching as inquiry" is to use the blogs to share our professional learning that we are doing in the class. Manaiakalani Innovative Teachers and Google Classroom on Air provide opportunities for the educators to connect and share. Technology is a boon that has been providing various opportunities for the teacher and learners to come together and share. Digitally fluency has been a demand of the new world as all of us passed through the pandemic like Covid (when we were online teaching and connecting with the students to promote learning).

Today was the astounding day for me as I got my Google Level 1 certification. I would like to thank my facilitators for the sessions they took and for their efforts to have me equipped with DFI tool. I would love to add more badges to my account. So I will continue my Digital fluency journey to learn more tools.

Day 8- Computational Thinking

Today was the 8th day of DFI session I was ready and excited to embrace new learning through out the day. Session was started with Karakia followed by connecting with each other. Everyone shared about what worked from the last week learning and what were  the challenges that we had.

Empowered:  Dorothy talked about being empowered. How to empower our whanau so that they can thrive in the changing world ? The idea of being empowered is being good in academic and excel. The concept of empowerment by the Manaiakalani program for the learner to provide education, good teaching resources, good health care system, better  schools. Low socio economic families will be disempowered and the choices will be taken away. Household income, occupation by the education they have, household crowding, income support create the range of decile system in the NZ school system. So there is the inequality in the education system that we could see in the decile system.

Education had been the best tool that could empower people to get what ever they want in life. Empowerment of language and complex conversation on different situations made them more confident as learners and creators.. Digital technology is an important tool in helping the people to get empowered.

Equitable digital operating services: This service is being provided to the Manaiakalani schools with no cost internet and tech support for the unconnected household with children.

No one feels empowered if that person is not connected and main idea was on ubiquitous learning.

Future of tech: Technology has been changing day by day as new inventions and discoveries are keep on coming day by day. Some technical advancements are good and some are bad. Technology has been replacing the people as the robots are performing human tasks so, in the future I feel with the more advancement it will impact the jobs in future and people have to find another ways to be in the competition.

Digital Fluency and Digital technology:

Manaiakalani program outreach helping the teachers to be digitally fluent required for effective teaching planning assessments. By attending DFI sessions, I feel that I have become more confident digitally that could help in this digital learning environment. Digitally fluent students became more independent in their learning and they could create rather then only being consumer of the technology.

Digital technology Curriculum I feel that was the vast topic to cover and lots of the things were new to me. We were given time to explore that content for the better understanding.  For computational thinking there were programming fundamentals and elements of programming.

I learned about different coding platforms like Minecraft, Scratch pad Jr. I have never used those and were completely new to me. We were given time to explore that in our bubble groups which I felt was quite overwhelming for me.
In the create session I made a whare by using Tinkercad. That was an amazing interactive session in which everyone created their whare. I really enjoyed a lot creating new stuff by using Tinkercad.

Today's Agenda : Devices - Day 7

Today's focus was on devices like Chromebook and iPad that our young people used in the school. Ubiquitous word was one of the Kaupapa word that holds the learning and barriers being removed. Dorothy talked about distance learning or hybrid learning and the power of ubiquitous learning. That was the effective teaching practice designed for high practice learning.

Now we have technology in the hands of our young people. So, in the extreme circumstances in case of any pandemic they can be confident and they could lift their learning by using class website and the workspace.

Idea of rewindable learning by using different tools is really amazing that helped students  in their learning. The idea of learning anywhere 'Living local and learning global'. Removing the barrier in the learning as they can  change the  pace of the video by pausing, rewinding, putting subtitles and slow down to learn on their own pace. By that way of learning young people can learn from anyone at any place and anywhere in the world.

Setting up summer learning journey by Manaiakalani for encouraging and participation of the more learners. So that their results continue to accelerates as their learning.

Cybersmart:  This is embedded  in  Manaiakalani goals of learn create and share. Being cybersmart, using powerful positive language and empowering our learners as connected and confident decision makers. Cybersmart word came from Australian govt. and used for empowering learners and keeping them safe. How the learners became  positive and successful digital citizens?

That approach was bases on future focused learning and connected communities. Cybersmart and role of the schools by filtering the sites that can be used in classroom and appropriate for the learners. Set up of the positive, thoughtful and helpful language for making our learner more powerful. There are some google themes that mirror the Manaiakalani Kaupapa.

Three key areas that are smart learners( learn) smart footprint (create), smart relationship(Share)

So being cybersmart the learners could be confident connected actively, involved and life long learners. Writing blogs by the learns made them more confident in connecting with each other.  Getting feedback and comment from the people they don't know made them more confident and connected to the world.

Hapara hot tip: To do list shows the students what they need to complete before due date:)

We were given time to explore the keys of Chromebook in our Digital Dig session. That was really helpful and I found it was really interesting. I learnt different shortcut keys to work smartly:)

Rewindable Learning: We have different options for the rewindable learning. There are different ways to capture the screen e.g. by using Screencastify , Quick time for Mac users, and  Screencast for chrome users. We were given time to explore Screencastify that was a chrome extension and used to record, edit and share the videos.  That was indeed an amazing tool that can be used to enhance learning. Overall, today's session was interactive and with lots of learning.

Enabling Access- Sites

Today's highlight was  Pedagogy and Kaupapa: Connected

I got to understand about a new word  Rangitāmiro that refers to 'being connected' at school, nation and to the world as well. Dorothy talked about Manaiakalani cluster that kept on growing as more and more people were connecting. She mentioned shared language was the strength of the connection between people that celebrate the differences and diversity. learn create share and connecting with each other. She talked about different opportunities that was provided to the teachers to support their learning in classroom for example DFI. Really important part was to maintain a network between teachers and learners. Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu empowers young people to be cybersmart and encouraging them to write quality blog and giving feedback . Stay connected to professional learning networks by blogging and staff meetings where teachers share their professional enquiries in groups. So that we as teachers got Idea about what strategies other teachers are using.

Leading learning using google sites: connect with pedagogy and kaupapa. Blogging is a highly important tool for encouraging the kids to write and connect share and create. Visibility for teaching and learning to learns and their wahanu. Benefits of the sites was for the engagement of learner and teaching conversation to those students who needs more help. cognitive challenge, scaffolding text for the students who needs more information and to accelerate their learning.

Sites are the visible space for one stop hub for learning. Providing multiple opportunities for visible planning and teaching handy during lockdown situation. Provide consistency to all of the age groups.

I had seen other people sites and gather some ideas that I can implement and improve my site. I like one teacher idea of putting the link of workspace to a particular task that they need to do. By clicking on that task that link navigate the learners to their task.

We worked in our bubble groups and explored each other sites that was an amazing experience for me to grab some more ideas to implement.

I created my page on acid and base based on multimodal text for today's session.

Collaborative teaching and learning: building sites (Day-5 )

Today's session was started with Karakia, followed by connecting with each other. Dorothy talked about the Pedagogy and Kaupapa about visible teaching and learning.

Kaupapa is about making teaching and learning visible. Dorothy mentioned that the intentional use of technology was a game changer for visible learning journey for the learners. Manaiakalani program of using google sites by the teacher is promoting learning that is replacing old school stuffs e.g. usage of books and printouts . She also talked about class sites that was very helpful for the students. Hapara is designed for visibility for the teachers and learners so that any barrier is removed. Digital technology has been becoming a part of learning and it is removing barrier in the learning journey. I really like the Idea about that the visibility is really important in teaching and learning.

Hapara hot tip for today was highlights and help the students to do guided browsing.

Deep dive in to Multi Modal Text:

We want to hook our learners to their learnings and connecting and interacting with each other. Different modes of communication highlighted by the Manaiakalani program to getting learner to personalized learning, empowering them, and engage them in their learning.

Changing the way of presenting the text and task and to make more interactive by adding more pictures and videos. It will really help the learners to be on task
We had a discussion about the multimodal sites and talked about multi text data base. Main parts of the texts are main text, complementary text, scaffolding text to provides extra support, supporting students to engage , challenging text for giving more information. learners selected text as well. We can use different video text infographics for the use of multimodal in the classroom to engage the students.

T-shaped literacy provide wide reading opportunities to the learns so that they can find relevant information and connect with the previous knowledge. It is providing the learners the opportunities to become independent learners. I learned to use Padlet and we created a Multi Modal task planning that I found really helpful. I am going to use Padlet for collaboration and enhance literacy in teaching and learning.

Dealing with Data- Day 4

Todays DFI session was on Dealing with Data.

Session was started with the  idea of sharing pedagogy. All the digital media is for sharing and connecting with each other. Sharing has a purpose to connect with each others. In the digital age we can reach beyond the local community with the world. I found that blogging is an important tool that can be used by the  students. It provides them a wider platform for sharing and getting recognized by others as people can review, share, comment, and provide feedback to the students.
It is a tool for digital citizenship and a very important life skill for the students. It provoke new learning by the people who stimulate our learning by writing comments and asking questions.
So, for my classroom I am going to work on blogging so that students share and learn from each other.

I learned about Google forms today. To create a new form go to google.forms.com. I learned to create a new form today. Choice elimination is a very good tool in Google form.

Hapara sharing tab enable further visibility and insight for the google drive of the students. I will encourage my students to tidy up their drive and manage the drive
Maps: Maps are great tool to put in the learning for teaching Mathematics and Science. I will use this in my class with students so that they can calculate  the distance from home to school  or the place where they belong.

I have learned about the deep dive with google sheets that was really new to me and I learned new things. Now I can manage data of my students and their progress.

In Google sheets, we can freeze the row and columns to see the data. We can resize the data and use that to get repetitive patterns. I learnt about conditional formatting tool that is use to highlights the students need more support or the column that we need to highlight. I was amazed by the use of sparkling line to make graphs in the single cell that was wow!

I made a google drawing in today's session by using spread sheet. Overall, today's session was amazing and I learned a lot.

Media Agenda: Day 3

Today was my 3rd day of DFI session. I was really excited to learn new things. Today's session was about media. The session was started by Karakia by Vicki Archer. After brief introduction of the session, we were headed to our groups.

Connecting with each other in our Digital Bubble:  In our digital bubble we shared our learning journey that worked for us. For most of us, Google Keep was the main highlight. Everyone was using it and it was really helpful and handy:).

Connecting with Manaiakalani - By Vicki Archer

Todays focus was on to Create:  For keeping our young people engaged. Vicki mentioned about Life long kindergarten group how  they were using and  developing technology and creativity to achieve the goal of  a world of playfully creative people, who constantly invent new opportunities for themselves and their communities. In New Zealand, the learner is at the center of the learning and all the lessons are developed by the teacher according to the need of the students.

e

Challenges for being creative: How to plan and run a lesson and how it will work for some students? we need to do different stuff in order to learning to happen.

How can teachers empower learners and Implement "create" in classroom?
  • Giving them choices,  proving them relevant knowledge and information, by developing skills, building capacity and scaffolding.
  • Able to collaborate with the peers. share Ideas and make connection with learning.
Hence, as a teacher we can provide more opportunities to create the content rather than consumers in the space.

Goals of Manaiakalani: Motivation of  the learner , utilizing the technology, learning from what students have shared and giving  feedback  what the students have create.

Chalk and talk with Amie:  How as teachers we are going to use and support pedagogy. Application for learning: Digital content is very effective and rewindable. Empower our learners to create collaborate and connect.
I learned about the YouTube and how to make a channel on it. We can add playlist and share with students. We can embed a video in our blog.
I also learned about snipping of the video (whatever I need to  share with my students). First we need to copy the link of video and  then put it on Google slides and there is a  section named formatting of the video where we can edit the timings of the video and share with the students:)
Hapara Hot Tips #2 by Kelsey:

We can view and managing the students files vis dashboard tab. Each tiles displays the document and files with in that student folder.

Deep Dive Media| He Ruku Hōhonu - By Vicki

We watched a video created by Google that was created using emotional connections and utilizing the music. video is a creativity tool . YouTube was launched in 2005 with intentions to provide opportunity for people to become media people. I came to know about SISOMO Sight sound Motion 2005 that is the media company that helps to engage people.

I learned how to create different type of media namely filmmaking tools, using of landscape view, placement of filming , lighting adjustment etc.

I learned about variety of different apps e.g. Screencassify that can be used to make videos.
There are few more apps like Imovie and Quicktime for Macbook.

The Only limitation with the free tools that you can make a video only for 5 minutes. However that is quite useful for the kids and for the teachers to create and share.
I also learned about Green screen: by putting ourselves at different location.

Chalk ‘n Talk Google draw: Learned tips and tricks of using Google drawing. How we can change the picture mask the picture and we can trace the picture and edit the drawing. I learned about the polylines to create the drawings.
Created about me Profile:

Chalk ‘n Talk: Google Slides by Amie
Google slides are really important tool for the learners. I learned to use animation for making Google slides more interesting.
For making animation, we use command D to duplicate the slides. We can change the size of slide by using page set up. We can add voice note by using Mote tool on our slides. Overall it was fruitful session and I really enjoyed learning new aspects of DFI.
